Caring for wooden furniture over the years
Little and often: the rule for a piece meant to last decades.
A solid or veneered wood piece needs no special products. It needs a soft, slightly damp cloth, no harsh detergents, and immediate drying. Spills are wiped at once; direct heat (pans, hot cups) is kept off with a mat.
Light changes the colour of wood: oak darkens slightly, walnut lightens. It is natural and even if the piece is not half covered for months; move objects around now and then.
Oiled surfaces ask for a fresh coat every one to two years depending on use; varnished or lacquered surfaces need only cleaning. A scratch or deep mark is repaired in the workshop: one of the advantages of a piece made to be maintained.
