Made by hand: why it is still worth it
In a made-to-measure piece, the maker's hand decides the right quantity, real customisation and the satisfaction of the person who will use it every day.
We are often asked: why make by hand, when an automated line produces faster and cheaper? The answer is not nostalgia. It is a design decision, taken piece by piece, for three practical reasons.
The right quantity, not the possible quantity
A machine pays off when it repeats. A workshop pays off when it gets it right. Every interior architecture project calls for a precise number of pieces: one table, six chairs, a cabinet for a 3.42-metre wall. Making by hand lets us produce exactly that number, with no minimum batch, no idle stock, and without asking the client to buy what the factory needs to sell. The scale is that of the site, not the line.
Real customisation
Customising is not choosing between three colours in a catalogue. It is drawing the table height for the person who will sit at it, adapting the shelf depth to the book that will live there, matching the wood to the existing floor, correcting the angle of a backrest after trying it. In the workshop, each of these decisions can still be taken during making. On a line, the drawing is frozen before the first piece exists.
Satisfaction for the user, not the producer
A handmade piece passes through the hands of someone who sees it whole, from technical drawing to final finish. That eye catches what the machine does not measure: a grain worth keeping visible, a joint that deserves one more pass, a drawer that runs well but could run better. The result is an object that ages well, can be repaired and adjusted. That is why clients who order one of our pieces rarely ask for the same thing again: they ask for the next one.
With industry, not against it
Making by hand does not mean refusing the machine. Precision cutting, booth lacquering and digital technical drawing are part of the process. The difference is who decides: at ärdəzən, technology serves the maker and the maker serves the project. That order is what guarantees the right quantity, real customisation and a piece the client loves for decades.
